Group President for Surgical Solution for Covidien Bryan Hanson released a statement saying, “After receiving reports connecting the use of the Duet TRS with patient death after thoracic surgery, we have made the decision that the product should not be used in such procedures. Accordingly, we are advising our customers that the Duet TRS should not be used in thoracic surgery.”

The faulty device, approved for medical use in 2009, is a single-use loading unit that features a fully integrated tissue reinforcement system which supports staple lines across tissue. Covidien has distributed approximately 500,000 units worldwide thus far. The company estimates that roughly one-third of the surgeries in the world featuring the device use it in thoracic operations. The corporation is aware of 13 incidents involving serious injuries and 3 fatalities related to the use of the Duet TRS. Covidien has drawn the conclusion that the faulty medical device could potentially injure close-by anatomical structures within the thorax.
